Trail Riding – Volunteer Opportunities
Hello Trail Riders,
More work on the Vandalia.
Subject: Sat. Oct 20 at Vandalia Trail
Hi Vandalia Trail Friends, I'd like to invite you to another opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and to help upgrade the Vandalia Trail at the same time. This Saturday, Oct 20, we'll meet at the treatment plant at 10 AM and begin by placing large rip-rap along the edge of the trail by the plant to create the initial erosion control and asthetic border there. Then, depending on the crew and if other preparations were possible ahead of time, we'll work on the equestrian crossing of a small seasonal brook closer to Amo. During my tour last weekend, I saw that Hendricks County Parks had filled in a large hole that had existed in the equestrian trail near Amo and the Crouse family had dug out most of the small stumps in the equestrian trail near Coatesville. If even more folks are available to tackle some of the items on the list below, we'll be able to soon take advantage of the wonderful equestrian trail that is forming and move on to upgrading the hike/bike trail. As it is, mine and Amy's time will be taken up coordinating additional trail work around the treatment plant and working with INDOT to improve SR75 traffic's visibility of the trail. For the other items below, coordinators from within Hendricks County could be quite effective. - Install culverts or other drainage features where the several small streams cross the trail. - Install horse trailer parking signs in Amo & Coatesville. - Negotiate public restroom access in Amo & possibly Coatesville - Grade and reinforce pathway up and over the large culvert on the west side of Amo. - Remove any remaining small stumps in the pathway. - Post trail signs designating the separate equestrian trail and bike/ped trail. - Install a hitch rail area between the sewer plant and Crittenden Creek. - Make clear with signs & barriers that it is unsafe for horses to try crossing the trestle. - Sign and configure the intersection of the 2 trails on the east side of the sewer plant, in order to slow bicycles when coming down the hill from the trestle. Emphasize giving right-of-way to horses. - Install trail crossing signs at streets in Amo, Coatesville, and in between. - Grade the junction of the equestrian trail with the railbed near Coatesville. - Replace gates on east side of SR 75 with locking bollards. - Clear back brush on both sides of SR 75 to improve visibility of traffic. - Install horse mounting blocks at key locations along the trail. - Install a barrier to discourage access to the Amo trestle over Mill Creek and install signs to discourage access to the private property to the north.
