On October 24 & 25, 2009, the Indiana Horse Council and Hoosier Horse Park joined forces to put on a multi discipline, multi breed horse show at the Hoosier Horse Park in Edinburgh, Indiana. The Octoberfest Indiana Horse Council & Hoosier Horse Park Footing Fund Inaugural Charity Horse Show was born.

The idea to start a new horse show at Hoosier Horse Park as a fund raiser for the Indiana Horse Council was presented to the IHC Horse Show Development Committee and Indiana Horse Council, Inc. Board of Directors by Jim Kirkham, Ingrid Schoenlein and Deana Hess in July of 2009.  Further planning and discussions lead to a mutually beneficial partnership between the Indiana Horse Council and the Hoosier Horse Park Footing Fund.

There were several objectives for this show: the first objective was to raise funds to benefit programs sponsored by the Indiana Horse Council; the second was to raise awareness and funds for the Hoosier Horse Park Footing Improvement effort; and the third was to bring together members of the equine community, each representing various disciplines and breeds, and have them share their knowledge and joy of horse ownership with each other and the general public.

Throughout the weekend exhibitors were able to show  their Miniature, Arabian, Thoroughbred, Paint, Quarter Horse, Kentucky Mountain Horse, Gaited, and other breeds in Dressage, Combined Training, Hunter & Jumper, Speed, Carriage Driving, and Side Saddle events.  Each event was officiated by knowledgeable officials in each breed and discipline.  The Friends of Ferdinand were also on the grounds exhibiting and competing with some of their rescue horses. The show was approved for points by the following Associations:

American Paint Horse Association

United States Hunter Jumper Association Outreach Medal Program

Indiana Dressage Society

Indiana Eventing Association

Indiana Saddle Horse Association

Kentucky Mountain Horse Association

Western Division - Octoberfest 2009

The Western portion of the Octoberfest Charity Horse Show was held in Baker Arena.  There were 80 entries featuring classes from halter, pleasure, trail and gaming.  Quarter Horses, Paint/Pinto and Throroughbreds were the breeds participating in the show.  This show was approved by the American Paint Horse and Indiana Saddle Horse Associations.  Margie Morgan from Crawfordsville, IN was the judge for the performance portion of the show, Sheila Landis from Rockville, IN was the trail judge and Katie Teeters from Trafalgar, IN was the announcer. 80% payback was offered in selected pleasure and gaming classes.  Special thanks goes out to the Performance Show chairman Wes Morelock, Gaming Show Co-Chairs Ted Norton and Clarence Sherrod , Show Office manager Pat Morelock and to all of the volunteers that gave their valuble time and effort into making this show a success.

English Division – Octoberfest 2009

The Open English and Driving Division of the Indiana Horse Council Octoberfest Charity Horse Show was held on Sunday, October 25, 2009 in Baker Arena at the Hoosier Horse Park.  The weather on Sunday was chilly but was much improved over the cold driving rain experienced during the Western Division on Saturday.  This was much appreciated by contestants and organizers alike.  The show started at 8 am with Judge David Davis officiating and Dan Hart as the announcer.  The English division contained 48 classes including lead line, halter, walk trot, side saddle, gaited pleasure, open English pleasure, equitation and driving classes.  The miniature horse owners/exhibitors had 6 horses and 5 handlers participating in halter, driving and jumping classes.  Other participating breeds included the Rocky Mountain Horse, Arabian, Half Arab, Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, Spotted Mountain Horse.  The show had several youth riders under the direction of Judy and Dan Hart who participated in multiple classes, giving them invaluable show experience.  The organizers wish to thank the Indiana Miniature Equine Club for their generous sponsorship. The show was approved by Indiana Saddle Horse Association and the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse Association.

Dressage — Octoberfest 2009

It was a dark cold morning… and all you could hear was the… ah… the… ah… the hum of the tractor Harold from the Hoosier Horse Park Staff was driving as he was frantically re-working the Dressage show rings to cover up the deer tracks and to groom the show rings to perfection for the start of the show. All of this while our first competitors were warming up – under the moon light! And such was the start of the Dressage portion of the first annual Octoberfest Charity Horse show benefitting the Hoosier Horse Park and the Indiana Horse Council Sunday, October 25, 2009. With 99 rides down center line scheduled for just one day of competition – we started promptly at 8am with more than a full day of judging.

With a staff of wonderful volunteers in place and ready to go by 745am – my right hand Person - Annie Hall - along with Kay Dixon, Dan Krietl, and a wonderful group from Harmony in the Park and IRUS stables - Toni Nelson, Andrea’ Bradley Stutz, Paula Bruveris, Megan Iemma the show began under the light of the moon and with temps - well, a little cooler than we had hoped! But horses and riders were on time to the ring to be judged. I cannot say enough about our Dressage Judges - Coralie Hughes and in the afternoon Lynn Berge – who we borrowed from the Eventing Show in order to complete all of our rides. Both judges had a daunting task before them with a tremendous turnout to support the show, and both were more than professional in their efforts - so with few breaks and a very quick lunch we did indeed complete 99 Dressage rides down centerline - the day was a great success.

With classes including Intro, 4-H, USPC and Dressage through fourth level - the riders enjoyed a day – once the sun officially came up – a day of sun - fun – all in the name of supporting the Hoosier Horse Park and the footing fund and the IHC. The Octoberfest Charity Show was indeed unique - and in the name of fun, the Dressage Ring featured Witches as Ring Stewards and a Witch Extraordinaire as our Hospitality Coordinator making sure judges and Scribes were set with enough Witches Brew (coffee) and Treats to keep them alert and moving forward. The Morning Rides ran without a hitch and at noon we broke for a quick lunch break.

The Afternoon rides began around 1230pm and Lynn Berge joined Coralie Hughes in a full afternoon of judging Dressage - Dressage rides after she spent her morning judging the Eventing-Dressage rides. We used the same two rings we had used in the morning - but needed to expand both rides to a Standard Dressage arena later in the afternoon. This was accomplished all in about a 10 minute period so all hands on deck! But everyone helped and the rings were expertly expanded – we had to keep moving in order to make sure we completed the show before we lost the daylight- and we did – concluding around 430pm – ready to pack up and head for home.

All of us were more than thrilled with the tremendous support of competitors for the Dressage Show. It was a quick turn around – with the entries closing just 1 week prior to the show – to get entries entered, stalls assigned, tests copies, numbers made, schedules run – then coordinate with the Eventing side to make sure we did not have rider conflicts – making sure they could get from a Dressage Ride – to a jumping round – back to a Dressage Ride – it got to be pretty tricky.. but with the help of Tracy Thomas Solomon – and my new cat Hemingway – who insisted on re-arranging my papers every two seconds… the show schedule was completed accommodating both disciplines.

This was a perfect first show in many ways.... and I need thank Deana Hess – for her work – support – and her tremendous efforts in coordinating all of the stabling! This was huge! Tracy Thomas Solomon - for lending me clip boards – volunteers and for helping to alleviate all of the rider conflicts and most importantly … for making me laugh and reminding me that we do this for fun and to support the Hoosier Horse Park and IHC. THANK YOU to ALL of the Volunteers - the IRUS and HARMONY people - the IHC and of course the fantastic staff of the Hoosier Horse Park – Harold, Drew, John, Chris and the rest of the staff – I could not run a show without you! But most importantly - THANK YOU TO ALL THE COMPETITORS! We truly could not have a show without you !

I learned quite a few things that will help with future Octoberfest shows; we made tremendous strides in helping with the HHP Footing fund and IHC fund – but all in all - it was a fantastic 1st Annual Octoberfest Dressage Show. See you in October!

Eventing - Octoberfest 2009

The Indiana Eventing Association has had a long standing commitment to the Hoosier Horse Park. When approached concerning the charity horse show, we were excited with the prospect of a horse show benefitting not only the Indiana Horse Council, but also the Hoosier Horse Park. Of any organization members that fully utilized the many disciplines of the IHC/HHP Octoberfest, It was IEA’s. IEA members were seen both days competing in hunter/jumper, gaming, in-hand, English pleasure and side-saddle. IEA director Dorian Aniline made quite the stir when western gamers saw him use the same horse for gaming as he did for his jumper classes. It was great fun and a wonderful opportunity to try new things!

Eventing is the triathalon of horse sports, where a horse trial consists of horse and rider combinations competing in Dressage, Stadium Jumping and Cross Country. Offering a full horse trial would have been impossible but IEA decided to sponsor a combined test where classes consisted of a dressage and stadium jumping test while offering schooling out on the Hoosier Horse Park cross county course. We also offered fun classes like the "handy eventer", "handy hunter" and doggie agility. We had 50 horses with over 100 entries in the combined test.

The combined test portion was lucky to have dressage Judge Lynne Bergh, stadium course designer Lee Ann Zobbe and stadium judge Holly Banta all donate their time and talent. The sun was barely over the horizon when dressage started at 8:00 am. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather and stadium promptly started at 10 am with all classes finished by 4:30 PM. Our dressage judge also helped out judging the dressage show once the combined test dressage finished at 1:30pm.

The combined test was happy to donate a final balance of $5800.00 to the IHC and HHP footing fund and looks forward to the show in 2010.

IHC combined test organizer, IEA President.
