The Hoosier Horse Fair & Expo Entertainment & Events

Here is the line-up of our entertainment for the 2011 HHF&E!
Stockdog Invitational

Some of the best working dogs in the Midwest and beyond will be on display as well as a variety of different breeds. The two-day event will host ten handler/dog teams that will be competing in a time and point cattle trial. Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Kelpies and Hangin’ Tree Cowdogs are a few that will be in attendance. The handlers will not see the course until the end of the trial, which consists of several different obstacles in an arena. The handlers and dogs are expected to calmly and efficiently move their cattle through the obstacles in the course order. The recent growth of interest in herding trial competitions, particularly in the U.S., has resulted in an increased interest in these dogs and in the herding potential of those breeds that were once primarily herding dogs. This is the first time the Hoosier Horse Fair and Expo has hosted the Stock Dog Invitational

Ranch Rodeo

Ranch Rodeo re-creates the roots of rodeo. The event widely hailed as the first rodeo was held in 1882 at North Platte, Nebraska and was produced by William F. (Buffalo Bill) Cody.

The competition was about the ranches and who could be awarded the prize of being the best ranch in the rodeo. Ranch-versus-Ranch contests gradually sprang up, and events were created that simulated what ranch cowboys did for work every day.

As time went on rodeo evolved and became a showcase of the individual cowboy rather than the team concept. Modern day Ranch Rodeo is a return to those times of teams and friendly competition.

Ranch rodeos return to those roots and focus on the cowboys, their families and the ranches they worked for to make sure the country does not lose sight of the important contributions to our country and our economy that the ranching industry and cowboys have made.

Ranch Horse Versatility

You’ll see three exciting events in one performance. The Ranch Horse Versatility competition features the finely tuned skills of a reining horse, the cow sense of a cutting/ working cow horse and the exhibitor’s skills of horsemanship and roping. All showcase the qualities that make a ranch horse desirable – sound conformation, versatile athletic ability, intelligence, calm temperament, and a willing disposition.

The American Ranch Horse competitions feature well broke, reliable, working horses and members who share a love for that true equine athlete. They open to all western stock horse breeds, whether ridden on the ranch, on the trail, or in the ring; and to all horse enthusiasts who want to become better horsemen and have more fun with their horses. The goal of the ranch horse program is to promote the abilities of the all-around versatile working horse, regardless of breed, through shows, clinics and sales in a positive atmosphere where honesty, personal growth and politeness towards fellow horsemen exists, where horses are always respected, and where true western tradition is genuinely honored.

Radio Disney Kids Corral

An area just for the little buckaroos to play!  There will be face painting, coloring, pony rides, giant rocking horses, petting area and other activities just for the youngsters.

Cowboy Mounted Shooters

Cowboy mounted shooting, the fastest growing equine sport in the nation, is a level based, family oriented, equestrian sport combining Wild West Show, Target Shooting, Contesting and Old West Re-enactment. The Mounted contestants dress in period clothing of the late 1800’s through the silver screen era. They compete in a fast-action, timed event, using two single action .45 caliber revolvers loaded with black powder blanks. The shooter engages 10 targets while negotiating a specified course drawn randomly from over 50 different patterns.

Dunkin Acres Donkeys

The six-hitch team of miniature donkeys owned by Ralph and Gerry Dunkin appeared in the 2009 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California. The Dunkins’ team pulls a polished black and brass wagon, custom made by the Amish, which Gerry drives. In addition to the Rose Parade, the team also appeared at a major horse show at the Burbank Equestrian Center along with other equine units from the parade. The team is comprised of Tex, Mex, Louie, Eddie, Chuck and Bear, all Mediterranean miniature donkeys. The team has appeared in many Midwest parades, as well as the Hoosier Horse Fair & Expo.

Woodbury Belgians

The Woodbury's have been supporting the Hoosier Horse Fair & Expo for 33 years! They are always willing to do anything asked of them. Keith bought his first Belgian in 1952 and built his herd from that day on. They use their horses on the farm...even though they have all the modern-day equipment! It gives the horses good experience in listening to commands, standing still, and just being exposed to all the different kinds of surroundings. They raise all their broodmares and a lot of their hitch geldings. The Woodbury’s have participated in the Milwaukee Circus Parade for over 30 years. As you can see, their lives revolve around these beautiful Belgians draft horses and their family. They are a great example of an equine family who have great a work ethic and outstanding values.

Hendricks County 4-H Color Guard

The Hendricks County 4-H Color Guard is the 2010 Indiana State Fair 4-H Champion unit. Color Guard competitions involve extensive training in which horses and their riders must execute a pattern of synchronized maneuvers. The Hendricks County unit was the first to repeat as champions four years in succession. Those who know the sport say that getting eight horses and eight riders all on the same page is not an easy task.

The Twilight

The Twilight, features sisters Ivy Dene and Sophie Dawn Walker. They have appeared numerous times over the last 4 years at festivals, state fairs, county fairs, and even appeared at last year’s CMA Fest, at Tootsies’ Orchid Lounge. The sisters along with their dad Billy, blend a mix of influences, from country, rock, blues and soul, to create one good time! If you have attended the Hoosier Horse Fair and Expo you will recognize Ivy. Ivy Dene has sung the National Anthem at the Hoosier Horse Fair and Expo for the last 4 years, and does an outstanding job kicking off events at the horse fair. “The Twilight” delights audiences of all ages, and always promises a great time!
