To help U.S. livestock producers protect their livestock from a devastating disease and wholesale destruction, the USDA and the Indiana State Board of Animal Health have implemented the National Animal Identification System (NAIS).  The program goal is to allow health officials to trace an animal's movement history within 48 hours in an emergency disease outbreak like foot & mouth disease.

The First part of the three-step program, called Premise ID, is now underway.  Livestock farmers have until September 1, 2006 (less than a year) to get their farm registered with BOAH.  BOAH need to register farm locations where animals reside.  They are not registering individual animals.  Farmers can register their farms through BOAH or Indiana Horse Council.  BOAH has named the Indiana Horse Council as an authorized agent to enter Premise ID's.
