About Our Show

Our charity show includes classes for a variety of disciplines and breeds. We want as many people as possible to have a chance to participate in a charity effort that brings back tangible benefits to the local and statewide communities. We encourage people to come watch our activities and learn about our equine community.

Hunter/Jumper, 3 Arenas,

Horses jump individually over 8-10 obstacles in a specific pattern. For Hunter classes, horses are judged on form and must jump roundly with their front legs tucked towards their nose. For Jumper classes, horses must jump a series of obstacles without incurring “faults”. Faults are knockdowns or hits of the obstacles, refusals to jump, or time penalties for not completing a course in theallotted time. In Equitation classes, the rider must demonstrate correct position in the saddle and present a workmanlike and confident picture to observers. For more info: www.ushja.org

Open Western Show, Baker Arena,

Horses are evaluated on manners and suitability for a relaxed but collected gait, cadence and a calm and responsive disposition. Classes include pleasure, trail, and halter.

Driving, Roads and Cross Country,

Driving competitions are open to any breed or type of horse. They may be driven alone or in groups, or teams, of up to four. They have three phases— dressage, marathon, and cones. They accrue penalties for poor form, hitting obstacles, time faults, and other criteria. The lowest total of cumulative penalties from all three phases determines the winner. For more information: www.americandrivingsociety.org

Speed Show, Baker Arena,

Originally a rodeo event, these contests are popular at a variety of venues throughout the U.S.. For this show, there will be barrel and pole bending competitions. For barrels, horses and riders run as fast as they can in a clover-leaf pattern around the barrels, trying not to tip them over. For pole bending, riders weave through a series of poles, “bending” their horses through the pattern as quickly as possible without knocking any poles over. For both of these classes, the fastest time wins.

Open English Show, Baker Arena,

Open to a variety of breeds, the English horse may be shown in either Hunt Seat, Saddle Seat, or Side Saddle tack. Horses perform as a group and are shown at gaits appropriate to their breed. Horses are judged on manners and performance.

Dressage, Dressage Arenas,

Dressage is a French term meaning “training”, and is often described as “horse ballet”. Movements are performed at different levels depending on the level of training a horse has. They may complete a passage (a slow motion trot), a piaffe (a trot in place), one and two-tempi changes (a Skip as the horse changes leads in the canter), or a pirouette. Horses are evaluated on the quality of their gaits and the exercises they execute. For more info: www.usdf.org, www.indianadressage.org, www.harmonyintheparkdressageshow.com

Combined Training, Dressage and Stadium Arenas

This show involves horses working both “on the flat” (no jumps) and over fences. Horses complete their dressage phase and then proceed to jumping phases both in the stadium and over cross country fences.

Octoberfest History

On October 24 & 25, 2009, the Indiana Horse Council and Hoosier Horse Park joined forces to put on a multi discipline, multi breed horse show at the Hoosier Horse Park in Edinburgh, Indiana. The Octoberfest Indiana Horse Council & Hoosier Horse Park Footing Fund Inaugural Charity Horse Show was born.

The idea to start a new horse show at Hoosier Horse Park as a fund raiser for the Indiana Horse Council was presented to the IHC Horse Show Development Committee and Indiana Horse Council, Inc. Board of Directors by Jim Kirkham, Ingrid Schoenlein and Deana Hess in July of 2009. Further planning and discussions lead to a mutually beneficial partnership between the Indiana Horse Council and the Hoosier Horse Park Footing Fund.

There were several objectives for this show: the first objective was to raise funds to benefit programs sponsored by the Indiana Horse Council; the second was to raise awareness and funds for the Hoosier Horse Park Footing Improvement effort; and the third was to bring together members of the equine community, each representing various disciplines and breeds, and have them share their knowledge and joy of horse ownership with each other and the general public.

Throughout the weekend exhibitors were able to show their Miniature, Arabian, Thoroughbred, Paint, Quarter Horse, Kentucky Mountain Horse, Gaited, and other breeds in Dressage, Combined Training, Hunter & Jumper, Speed, Carriage Driving, and Side Saddle events. Each event was officiated by knowledgeable officials in each breed and discipline. The Friends of Ferdinand were also on the grounds exhibiting and competing with some of their rescue horses. The show was approved for points by the following Associations:

American Paint Horse Association
United States Hunter Jumper Association Outreach Medal Program
Indiana
Dressage Society
Indiana
Eventing Association

Saddle Horse Association
Kentucky Mountain Horse Association
